Just when you thought you’d seen all variations of ‘staches, here comes the fingernail ‘stache! Female employees at Clearview Federal Credit Union in Moon Township, Pa., displayed their artistic creations during Youth Week.

Rapping pigs, tricked out branches and Moonjar Moneybox giveaways highlighted Youth Week at Unitus Community Credit Union in Portland, Ore. Hamilton the Pig – Unitus Federal’s Kids Club mascot – took photos with young savers at an open house at a Unitus branch, and entertained third-graders at a nearby school by leading The Dollar Holler Rap, after which every student received a Hamilton piggy bank. Staff decorated branches and wore fun T-shirts while conducting a “Collect the Clues” scavenger hunt, and young members that made a deposit or opened a uSavers account received a Moonjar Moneybox, which teaches kids the principles of saving, donating and spending their money.

Free ice cream is a powerful motivator for everyone, and the giveaway worked wonders for Western New York FCU during its Youth Week promotion, which included the third week of April as well. Anyone who opened a Smart Saver Kid’s account – for members 13 and younger – received a CUNA coin holder that they were encouraged to fill with quarters and return to the credit union in West Seneca, N.Y., a coupon for complimentary ice cream and an entry to win $100 from CUNA. Existing Smart Savers received those gifts for every deposit during that span. Western New York FCU opened eight Smart Saver accounts and reaped total youth deposits of $3,628 for a successful Youth Week promotion.

After observing that Arbor Day and Earth Day both fell during Youth Week, Horizon Federal Credit Union in Williamsport, Pa., decided to tie the themes together with an outreach program into the communities it serves. Horizon Federal contracted with FourthGradeForesters, which employs people with disabilities, to purchase and deliver trees to area fourth-graders. “Trees are like savings—they don’t grow overnight,” Horizon CEO Traci Donahue says. “They both need nurturing, and in time both the tree and savings will be bountiful.” For its young members, Horizon held a drawing for tickets to Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland (a specialized zoo), as well as gift cards, ear buds and pedometers.

Thanks to an enthusiastic push by front-line staff, an electric social media campaign, and word-of-mouth promotion by a group of very active youth members, Members “First” Community Credit Union in Quincy, Ill., blew its Youth Week goals out of the water. So far, Members “First” has accepted 55 deposits and opened 11 new accounts, with young savers socking away $6,945.25. Meanwhile, its youth checking challenge, which features a tablet computer giveaway, has generated four new accounts.

Youth Week at Fulda (Minn.) Area Credit Union culminated with a family bowling outing for young savers and their families. The free event featured activities like constructing a duct tape wallet, and prizes based on the Savings Sleuth: Solve the Mystery theme such as books, pencils and fake mustaches.

Preschoolers visiting Telcoe Federal Credit Union in Little Rock, Ark., learned the value of money during Youth Week as they decided to save, spend, or share what they had earned at a fictitious job. The children shopper from Telcoe’s “grocery store,” choosing 25-cent items such as Goldfish crackers and fruit snacks. Several donated to the Humane Society to help puppies. Telcoe also reminded the kids of all the free entertainment options out there, such as identifying shapes in the clouds, going on a nature scavenger hunt, chalking the sidewalk for hopscotch.

It’s only proper to extend one’s pinkie when celebrating National Credit Union Youth Week with tea and crumpets. That’s the belief at SageLink Credit Union in Durand, Mich., which has been featuring an entertaining photo of its staff daily on its Facebook page and giving away a ‘Stache Your Cash T-shirt to one lucky member who “likes” the image. “This has been a huge hit and our members have really embraced Youth Week this year,” marketing representative Courtney Gazso says. Throughout April, which is Financial Literacy Month, SageLink is offering rewards to existing youth members for making deposits and new youth members who open accounts.

In celebrating Youth Week, First Family Credit Union brought a little Harlem to Henryetta, Okla. The Harlem Shake, that is. Staffers got their freak on in (their rendition of the viral dance sensation) while donning everything from mustaches—the red-hot symbol of this year’s Youth Week—to motorcycle helmets, beastly masks, neon Afros, and a costume that melds Sacajawea with Daniel Boone.

Altra Federal CU in Onalaska, Wis. is celebrating youth during the entire month of April, offering a $20 match to any new account opened by those 17 and under. Additionally, during Youth Week, Altra scheduled numerous activities including one for young children at a local library. The library visit included an educational story time, activities for the children, and Altra’s youth program mascot Cash.

Rivers Edge Community CU in Allen Park, Mich. organized a slate of events. The CU’s employees assisted a local Reading is Fundamental Program, offered ID Kits, ran a penny-counting contest, and offered incentives for new accounts.

The employees at Thornapple Valley Community CU in Hastings, Mich. are wearing mustaches all week, while the CU is offering numerous activities and giveaways for kids. The CU also revamped its kid’s club accounts and rolled out new "Monkey Money" that can be earned for deposits, birthdays, top grades on report cards, and attending CU events like Youth Week. Monkey Money is redeemable for prizes.

Great article! Unfortunately, most employees don’t feel valued or appreciated by their supervisors or employers. In fact, research has shown that the predominant reason team members quit their jobs is because they don’t feel valued. This is in spite of the fact that employee recognition programs have proliferated in the workplace – over 90% of all organizations in the U.S. has some form of employee recognition activities in place. But most employee recognition programs are viewed with skepticism and cynicism – because they aren’t viewed as being genuine in their communication of appreciation. Getting the “employee of the month” award, receiving a certificate of recognition, or a “Way to go, team!” email just don’t get the job done. How do you communicate authentic appreciation? We have found people have different ways that they want to be shown appreciation, and if you don’t communicate in the language of appreciation important to them, you essentially “miss the mark”. Additionally, employees need to receive recognition more than once a year at their performance review. Otherwise, they view the praise as “going through the motions”. A third component of authentic appreciation is that the communication has to be about them personally – not the department, not their group, but something they did. Finally, they have to believe that you mean what you say. How you treat them has to match the words you use. If you are not sure how your team members want to be shown appreciation, the Motivating By Appreciation Inventory (www.appreciationatwork.com/assess) will identify the language of appreciation and specific actions preferred by each employee. You then can create a group profile for your team, so everyone knows how to encourage one another. Remember, employees want to know that they are valued for what they contribute to the success of the organization. And communicating authentic appreciation in the ways they desire it can make the difference between keeping your quality team members or having a negative work environment that everyone wants to leave.
