Burns noted the event’s proximity to the birthplace of Canada’s CU movement in Levis, Quebec, led by CU pioneer and journalist Alphonse Desjardins. Desjardins later helped create the St. Mary’s Cooperative Credit Association in Manchester, N.H.—the first CU in the U.S.
This institution continues to operate today as St. Mary’s Bank CU.

WOCCU President/CEO Brian Branch greets Sheryl WuDunn. The best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize winner discussed women’s economic empowerment at the 2013 Global Women’s Leadership Forum, held in conjunction with the conference.
WuDunn believes that, in addition to education and jobs, microsavings can provide economic empowerment, which is a key to solving gender inequality worldwide.

The annual award—named for the Greek goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, justice, and strength—honors outstanding achievement in support of CU development, particularly as it relates to worldwide CU women’s leadership development.

The World Council’s Young CU People (WYCUP) program held a networking and educational session for CU leaders age 35 and younger. Fifty-eight people from 12 countries attended the session and will participate in several more events throughout the conference.
